The checkpoint, named after the letter "C" in the NATO alphabet, was a symbol of the city's division and tensions between the two political blocs.

The story of Checkpoint Charlie is characterized by drama and espionage. Numerous spectacular escape attempts took place here, in which courageous people tried to overcome the wall and reach the freedom of the West. Some made it, others were caught or even shot.

The checkpoint was also a meeting point for diplomats, journalists and tourists from all over the world visiting divided Berlin. Here the soldiers of the Allies and the Soviet Union faced each other. Today it is a tourist attraction and a place of remembrance for the victims of the division of Germany.
