Mostar and Neretva River (Story)

The city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina is famous for its iconic bridge, the Old Bridge ("Stari Most"), which is a major landmark of the city... Read more >>>
Built in the 16th century during the Ottoman rule of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the bridge was a masterpiece of architecture. It was built in 1566 under the direction of the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. The Old Town of Mostar has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005.
During the aggression on Bosnia (later war), the Old Bridge was destroyed by Croatian forces in 1993, which represented a great loss to the cultural heritage. After the war, the bridge's restoration became a symbol of reconciliation and reconstruction in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Reconstruction of the bridge began in 2001 and was made possible through international donations and efforts. The new bridge was completed in 2004 and is a faithful reconstruction of the historic structure.
The Stari Most spans the Neretva River, which is considered one of the coldest rivers in Europe. The river flows picturesquely through the city and gives Mostar a special atmosphere. The combination of the historic bridge, the clear waters of the Neretva River and the fascinating architecture make Mostar an unforgettable travel destination. The Neretva River is about 225 kilometers long, and over time has created a deep canyon known as Neretva Canyon. This canyon is a breathtaking natural formation that shapes the landscape around Mostar.
