Another iconic landmark of Baščaršija is Sebilj (Turkish: sebil) is an Arabic word meaning "way". As a term, it refers to a benevolent and very old institution, a fountain of a special shape in squares, where the Sebiljdžija drew water from the basin and supplied the thirsty free of charge. The Sebilj in Sarajevo is a pseudo-Ottoman style wooden fountain in the center of Baščaršija in Sarajevo. It was built in 1753 by the Bosnian vizier Mehmed-paša Kukavica. This Sebilj was located slightly below the current location and burned down in a fire in 1852. However, it was then moved to its current location in 1891 according to the plans of the Czech architect Alexander Wittek. This area is often referred to as the “Place of the Pigeons”.
